Known as “the Land of Enchantment,” New Mexico attracts millions of visitors every year. Its capital, Santa Fe, founded in 1610, is known for its Spanish colonial architecture. It’s also home to a vibrant arts scene, as well as the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, featuring the artist’s iconic New Mexican landscape paintings, and the open-air Santa Fe Opera.
Many people go to New Mexico in the summer to fish, camp, admire the magnificent scenery or attend the various festivals and rodeos. Every October over 500 hot air balloons and tens of thousands of hot air balloon enthusiasts gather for the Albuquerque International Balloon Festival, one of the largest of its kind in the world.
Two of New Mexico’s most unique physical features are the caverns near Carlsbad which are among the most spectacular natural rock formations in the world and the extensive gypsum sand dunes at White Sands National Monument in south central New Mexico, which were created by wind and water erosion.
